Massive congratulations to our University Be Active Fitness Premier team mate Tash Fitzsimons on being selected in the Vantage Black Sticks World League team!
After the success of the event last year, we thought we would try it again. Same idea, different beers!
The second annual Varsity Hockey Beer Tasting is coming up soon - Friday 12 May. You will have to be in quick as spaces are strictly limited.
Starting at 7:30pm upstairs at Little George, $20 will get you tasting sizes of five different (and slightly unusual) beers, a larger beer to wet your whistle and some snacks to munch on. You'll hear an interesting story or two about the beers and audience participation is encouraged :)
Payment will need to be made by Thursday 11 May in order to secure your spot (and so we know how much beer to get!). You can pay cash to Brendon Jones or the committee executive, or pay directly into the club account via Internet banking (Waikato University Hockey Club 03-1555-0091780-00, use your name and "beer" in the reference fields).
See you there!
We hope everyone survived the long weekend and the wild weather! Here is a round up from the previous weeks games...
Both our premier teams took on Fraser Tech, this were both big games with Storage King Premier Men defending the OneStaff Challenge Shield and our Be Active Fitness Women challenging for the Shield.
Storage King Premier Men had a tough match but managed to ease out to a 3-1 win and retain the Shield for another week.
Be Active Fitness Women also had a close battle, Tech scored from a PC in the opening quarter but the Varsity Women soon settled into the game. and scored an equaliser. After half time and some inspirational words we managed to slot two quick goals and go up 3-1. The last quarter was tough with Tech having several PC's, they managed to peg one back but Varsity held on for a well earned 3-2 win which meant they took the OneStaff Shield off Tech! Congrats to both of our Premier teams who now both hold the OneStaff Shield !
Reserve A Women also beat Fraser Tech 5-1
Reserve A Men drew 3-3 with Collegians
One2one Photography Reserve B Women lost 2-1 to Marist
Reserve B Men lost 3-0 to Suburbs
Social Women lost 5-0 to Old Girls
Social Men lost 4-2 to Old Boys North Care
Storage King Premier Men win a close fought match versus Suburbs Piako Hockey Club, taking the Ben Gilby-Todd Trophy and Challenge Shield.
Well good lads!
Another weekend of hockey is done and dusted, congrats to our teams that won :)
The Storage King Premier Men almost snuck another win in the last minute with another deflection goal but couldn't make it two wins in a row, they drew 3 all with TA in close battle.
Be Active Fitness Premier Women came out firing after their bye week also against Te Awamutu. The ladies dominated from the get go with their excellent passing and being able to hold possession. They made the most of their opportunities in the circle and we up by 5-0 at half time. TA regrouped and played much better in the second half but the Varsity ladies continued to maintain pressure and slot a couple more. Final score 7-0 with a hat trick by Georgia Morton.
Uni Reserve A Men lost 2-1 to OB
Uni Reserve A Women won convincingly beating Suburbs 4-0, they allowed Suburbs very few opportunities and continued their good form with great passing and communication.
One2One Uni Reserve B Women had a tough match against a sharp TA side, they held their own for significant patches of the game but a couple of poor spells let TA dominate. Final score 6-0
Uni Reserve B Men went down 3-0 to the Warriors.
Uni Social Women had a BYE
Uni Social Men lost to Pastits 4-1.Well done and good luck for next week!
Some good hockey games were played on the weekend!
Storage King Premier Men took down Old Boys in a great game on Saturday. After scoring in the first minute of the game they followed this up when they converted a PC. The lad's managed to hold possession under pressure well at times but Old Boys came back strongly with two goals of their own. The last quarter the was a tight battle with the Varsity men finding the goal through an excellent crash ball and deflection in the last few minutes.
Uni Reserve 1 Men came out like a new team this week, with star striker Adam Jurisich being on the injured list the guys decided it was up to them to score some goals which they well and truly did. Final score 11-2.
Uni Reserve 2 Men went down to the TA Mako's 4-1.
Uni Reserve 3 Social Men went down in a close battle with TA, final score 3-2.
Premier Be Active Fitness Women had a bye this weekend but are taking on TA this Saturday and are rearing to go.
Uni Reserve 1 A Women took on Uni Reserve 1 B on a hot sunny afternoon. We never enjoy having to play each other and were low on numbers but the A team ground out a tough win 3-0.
Uni Reserve 2 Social Women played Fraser Tech. The girls played out of their skins on a hot morning on what was really their first game of the season after being defaulted to previous week. They had consistent periods of attack and defended well and were unlucky not to be awarded a PC in the dying minutes after sustained attack. Final score 1-1.
Looking forward to some good games this weekend!

The opening weekend of hockey has been and gone, we managed to miss most of the rain! Here are our results:
Storage King Premier Men went down 3 nil to Collegians.
Be Active Fitness Premier Women ended up with a 2-2 draw, although they had the majority of the possession and territory they weren't able to get the win, conceding a goal in the last minute.
Reserve A Women had a convincing 2-0 win over New World Old Girls. The ladies finally converted with 10 minutes to go after dominating for the whole match.
Reserve B Women played very well against Fraser Tech, after conceding early they fought back to be winning 3-2 with minutes to go but Tech snuck another in right before the final whistle.
Reserve A Men went down 2-1 in a close game which was marred by a few colourful cards.
Reserve B Men also went down in a close battle with UMS on Sunday night, the men played with some great structure which is looking positive for the coming weeks.
Reserve Social Women were out of luck this week with Suburbs defaulting due to not enough players :(
